The historical society is proud of the fact that the museum is considered to be one of the top ten local history museums in the state of Indiana. The Elkhart County Historical Society owns the collection which can be seen in the thirteen display areas of the museum. The displays are arrange by both theme and period. The Elkhart County Historical Museum is housed in the historic Rush Memorial Center in Bristol, Indiana. Placed on the National Register in 1991, the building originally served as the county's first consolidated school. The historical society is the official repository for government records which are stored in the museum's archives. The museum also contains a working genealogy library.

The museum is open year-round: Tuesday - Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST

Over 20,000 artifacts are on display arranged by time period and theme. Treasures of the Past is a collection of artifacts from the middle 1800's to early 1900's. The Cottage shows a typical home around the turn of the century. The Children's Room has the one room schoolhouse display and a number of school and childhood related artifacts. The Emporium contains the stores and shops of yesteryear. Among them are the doctor's office, the general store, the dressmaker's shop, and the barber shop. The Memorial Room is a lasting tribute to those who fought in defense of this country. Included are artifacts from the youngest Civil War soldier and a piece of the towel General Lee used to surrender at Appamattox. The Township Room contains artifacts from each of the 16 townships in Elkhart County including the original headstone from the grave of one of five Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Elkhart County. The Native American Hallway contains artifacts of the first people to live in Elkhart County. It also displays some of the geology of the area. The railroad was vital to the success of Elkhart City. In The Depot there are many artifacts displayed that are related to this important industry. The Not-So-Long-Ago Room shows a typical home of the mid-20th century.

The Victorian Room contains elaborate furnishings typical of the Victorian time period. The Victorian time period was named after Queen Victoria who ruled over England 1838 - 1901. The Library contains books of local genealogies and histories. Portraits of important Elkhart County people line the walls and the display case contains photographic and office equipment. A collection of map making tools and original civil war maps made by Ambrose Bierce are also on display in this room. Bierce, who lived in Elkhart briefly during his younger years, was the author of an "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge." The Auditorium seats approximately 350 and is available for rent along with additional meeting rooms. It also houses the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame honoring local athletes, coaches, media personalities and volunteers.

Guided tours featuring a variety of tour topics are offered by appointment. Groups can register for specific tours or presentations. Programs: Various special events and programs are offered throughout the year.
